Deep Roots - Louise Kelly
Inspired by the natural terrain of the prairie land in Illinois, singer-songwriter Louise Kelly single Deep Roots, portrays the livelihood that one could find in a hidden prairie world and all that springtime has to offer. Birds, flowers, grasses, insects and more animals thrive deep within the native plants. The artist received a grant to support her efforts in ecological restoration from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. The project was to aid as educational support to locals and students on the “Prairie State.” As a lyrical music video, I wanted to highlight the life in each scene as playful, thriving and charismatic.
The animation features vector illustrated characters to resemble simple designs, with texture stylizations, a treatment that was approachable and friendly for youth similar to children’s illustrated books but also engaging for a mature audience as well. The colors are vibrant, and the ecosystem is presented in different sequences, night and day, to show that its life that it sustains is always there. Overall, we wanted to portray community both creatures and humans coming together to protect sacred lands as viewers follow the lyrics and the pacing of the music.
