Lola’s Bakery
Lola means grandmother in Tagalog, this animated short series features the misadventures of Lola and her young granddaughter Kakay set in a local Temple Street LA Filipino bakery. Colors of of manila envelope yellow, faded ube purple, pandan greens, and light crimson washes evoke a nostalgia for FilAm culture. A series in the making, the teaser sketches out curiosity, playfulness, and an endearing dynamic between family and the city.
Combining digital illustrations and 2D animations, the style is inspired by sketchy cartoons from the ‘90s. Cool and playful, I wanted to create a series where it opens up a day in the life following a hardworking woman, and a silly adventurous high-spirit child. The concept outlines an immigrant dream in Historic Filipinotown, and the family strength behind it. Through the designs and minimal voices, the focus on gestures and sound design enliven the character’s world of baked goods, kape (coffee) and love.
